Founded in 1670 at the junction of the Cooper and Ashley rivers, Charleston, or the Holy City, is the jewel of the South. Charleston is the second most populous city in South Carolina, and it is also the fastest growing. Charleston County actually consists of several distinct areas: Downtown Charleston (the peninsula), West Ashley, East Cooper (Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and Wild Dunes), James Island, John’s Island, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, and Daniel Island. This all exists in what we refer to as the Lowcountry as the Charleston area is home to the largest expanse of unspoiled salt marsh in the world.
Since before the Revolutionary War, Charleston Harbor has been one of the largest seaports in America. Today, it remains the second largest port on the east coast, the forth largest in North America, and the second most productive in the world, behind Hong Kong. One major change in Charleston’s economy in the second part of the twentieth century was the emergence of tourism as the area’s largest industry. Many of the 18th century homes and plantations are not only still standing, but still maintain their splendor and historic significance. Add to that our area beaches on the barrier islands like Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, and Dewees Island; our world class golf courses like Kiawah, Wild Dunes, Rivertown, Daniel Island, Patriot’s Point, and Charleston National; fine dining that is second to none; and our yearly fine arts festival, Spoleto. The Charleston area also has many unspoiled waterways, creeks, inlets, and bays that are perfect for boating, jet skiing, parasailing, fishing, crabbing, and kayaking. Our mild climate also allows tourism to remain a year-round industry. Charleston’s economy has lately been undergoing another change as it becomes a prime location for information technology jobs and corporations. Google has recently found a home in Charleston, and already located here are Blackbaud, CSS, and Modulant. Local startup Automated Trading Desk recently sold for a staggering $680 million! Add to all of this the Charleston real estate market, which remains strong, and you’ll see that Charleston, SC is a boom town!
